Gary Balch Obituary, Former General Counsel The International Association Of Prosecutors Dies

Gary Balch Obituary, Death – The Secretariat of the International Association of Prosecutors is profoundly saddened to tell all IAP members of the passing of Gary Balch, our former General Counsel, on Wednesday, July 12, 2023. His passing was announced by the Secretariat. Gary was a very talented lawyer who was also very professional and well-respected. Throughout his career, he maintained a strong interest in international cooperation and collaboration, which contributed to his success in this field.

Working inside the CPS Proceeds of Crime unit and also as the UK liaison prosecutor to the United States helped him establish his experience in domestic and international asset recovery while he was employed by the Crown Prosecution Service of England and Wales in England and Wales. During this time, he also served as the UK liaison prosecutor to the United States. Gary started working for the IAP as our General Counsel in April 2019 and will continue to do so until September 2022.

During that time, Gary was instrumental in the early stages of the construction of what is now known as the Prosecutors International Cooperation Platform (PICP). He also oversaw the expansion of the International Association of Prosecutors’ professional development program, which included the establishment of the Global Training Academy, Specialist Networks, and regional and annual conferences.

Those who had the opportunity to collaborate with Gary will remember his fantastic sense of humor, contagious laugh, upbeat outlook, thoughtfulness, and unwavering commitment to his profession. Gary was a friend and colleague who was held in very high regard, and both the IAP Secretariat and the rest of our membership will miss him very much because of these qualities.
Our prayers and thoughts are with his immediate family as well as the rest of his family, friends, and coworkers.
