Shooting In Columbus Ohio- After a gunshot was believed to have taken place in South Franklinton late Thursday afternoon, a Columbus police officer was taken to the hospital for treatment, and portions of Interstates 71 and 70 were shut down while officials searched for a suspect who fled on foot. It was stated that the incident took place approximately 4 o’clock on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 near West Mound Street.
According to the reports of the Columbus police, one of the suspects was shot and killed in the vicinity of the interstate, while another was said to have fled on foot in the vicinity of the Franklin County Children’s Services Building and Mount Calvary Cemetery. According to a spokesperson of the dealership, the suspects stole a vehicle from the Byers Import/Porsche Columbus dealership located in the 400 block of North Hamilton Road in Whitehall. After that, it’s been alleged that the two of them robbed a local bank, and at some point during the confrontation with the police, the officer was shot.
It is said that the suspect who is still at large has dreadlocks and is donning a striped shirt in red, white, and blue along with a black hoodie. The Columbus police, who apparently sustained a leg injury, was transported to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, located in the Downtown area of the city. According to Brian Steel, executive vice president of the Fraternal Order of Police Capital City Lodge No. 9, the officer is in the process of undergoing surgery at the moment.
The Franklin County Children Services building located at 855 W. Mound St. was surrounded by law enforcement officers. There was a SWAT team present, and the building was placed under lockdown for approximately one hour while they were there. Officers from Franklin and Perry townships, as well as those from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, are currently present at the site along with the Columbus Police Department. They are also at the Mount Calvary Cemetery, which is located just across the street from the Children’s Services office, from where a possible fleeing suspect was observed.
During their search for the suspect, the police have closed down a number of motorways, which has caused chaos for commuters in the afternoon. I-70 east at I-670 east; the ramp from I-71 north to I-70 west is closed; I-70 west at Rich/Town streets; and the ramp from Route 315 south to I-70 west is closed, as stated by the Ohio Department of Transportation.
